    Default Medicine options with 2:2

Firstly, hello everyone in the UKMS community : )

I am a recent graduate with a 2:2 BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences. This came as a shock as I was hoping for a 2:1 in order to go on and study medicine. I want to hear other peoples views on whether studying medicine would still be possible. I am not sure where to start, whether or not to do the gamsat and apply for grad entry at QMUL/Nottingham or do an MSc/MRes and then try.

Thanks in advance for your responses

Welcome to UKMS - how did you hear about this site?

Sorry to hear that you're not happy ith your degree class, but don't worry/ Biomedical science is a really difficult course anyways.

Most probably won't accept a 2:2 to be honest, but this is not the end of the world and you can still pursue your dreams. Try looking at foundation / access courses for medicine.

If you have any further question, please get in touch!

Hi Bumblebee and welcome to UKMS. Sorry to hear that you didn't get the results you wanted. I don't think it will harm you to try and apply and certainly doing a masters would add another feather to your cap. Do you know what you would do it in? I would definitely advise you to do it in something you enjoy as it can soon become very boring and difficult for you to complete at a good standard.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your replies. I`ve actually found and gained a place on an MSc programme in regenerative medicine which is an area I`ve always been interested in and am due to start in September. I know I have my work cut out as an MSc is no piece of cake, but this is a topic I am very much interested in.

I must admit I was in a (slight) state of panic with my previous message, however, I had always had the option of an MSc/MRes at the back of my mind prior to recieving results, and had even researched a few as back ups so was not completely lost. I just wanted to know whether doing an MSc/MRes would help me gain a place in medicine with my 2.2. Correct me if I`m wrong, but, I dont think it does with the majority of unis as they only take your first degree into account. Having said that, I am currently revising for the gamsat, and was sure to choose an MSc programme that suited me. For me it was always either medicine or research, but slightly more weighted towards the former! So being given a year to do an MSc (although expensive!) is a bit of a blessing! Coming out of it will atleast help me form a more concrete career path - medicine or research.

I had begun to prepare for gamsat last summer, however due to other reasons was not able to sit the exam. So, this time around I`m not completely lost with it - which I admit I was last year - so, hopefully should get the mark I need. But in the meantime I will be commencing a course which I am interested in anyway, and which should, hopefully benefit my career prospects in the long run.

Maleehali - I would say the best thing to do is do what you want to do - as silly as that sounds! Dont just think about what you need to do just to get into medicine, go for gamsat (if you havent already done), but dont spend the next year doing a MSc/MRes if its not something you really want to do.

Thanks for your advice guys, and sorry for the delayed response! I seem to have written an essay!
